1.) Saudi Arabia’s ‘Mada’in Salih’
This outstanding travel location simply could not be properly conveyed with just one photo. Located in Saudi Arabia is a Nabataean city which has been carved entirely out of rock. Much like the Jordanian city of Petra, Mada’in Salih is an incredible site, but is difficult to access, requiring proper planning from the start. The city is currently awaiting acceptance as a UNESCO World Heritage member, which is currently at a tentative status. At the present time many who are of the Muslim faith will not set foot in the locale due to the prophet Muhammed passing through it at a time when the city was being accounted for by the Bukhari, and there is even a Qur’an passage which relates the story behind these stone dwellings.
If you choose to visit Mada’in Salih during your travels a permit is required, though some do state they have been allowed access to the city by presenting only valid legal identification. Permits can be obtained through the hotel operator where you opt to be accommodated, and the process typically takes about a week from beginning to end. If you have the opportunity and the means to visit Mada’in Salih, and you have time to go through the proper permission channels, this is a magnificent and breathtaking place to visit, literally one which will take you back while providing you with an expansive, profound, and enjoyable education.
